10 Fun books for couples to read together

A picture of Jojo Moyes' me before you book

It's not often that you come across a book that has the power to make couples see life from a different perspective, prompting us to reassess our values, biases, principles, and morals. 'Me Before You' is precisely that kind of book.

It is a deeply moving and thought-provoking novel that tells the story of Louisa Clark, a young woman who becomes the caregiver for Will Traynor, a once-active man who is now quadriplegic after a tragic accident. The book explores the unlikely bond that forms between them as Louisa tries to show Will that life is still worth living, while Will wrestles with his desire to end his suffering through assisted suicide.

The narrative touches on themes of love, loss, and the complexities of living with a disability, all infused with Moyes' signature humor and warmth. Despite the gravity of the subject matter, the author masterfully balances light-hearted moments with candid discussions about the difficult, and often avoided, realities of living with a disability.

It’s a story that can touch your soul and perhaps even alter your perspective on life. I was particularly impressed by the author’s ability to craft such an honest narrative, filled with both love and humor, while confronting the harsh and less-discussed aspects of disability head-on.

I cannot emphasize enough how moving and beautiful this story is. It’s a book that encourages reflection on love, autonomy, and quality of life. I highly recommend every couple to give this book a read, as it not only opens up meaningful conversations but also fosters a deeper understanding of emotional and physical challenges in relationships.

Book: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

This book held me spellbound from start to finish, an emotional rollercoaster and a personal favorite. Set in a charming coastal town in Australia, the story begins on kindergarten orientation day when a young boy is accused of harming a little girl. What seems like a simple incident quickly escalates, unraveling secrets and tensions that reshape relationships, alliances, and loyalties among the parents.

The narrative masterfully blends humor, heartbreak, and suspense, keeping readers hooked with unexpected twists and deeply relatable characters.

With its sharp exploration of human nature and how small actions can have profound consequences, this book offers an irresistible mix of drama and emotional depth that makes it hard to put down.

The characters navigate shared adventures and private struggles, exploring themes of broken dreams, shattered hearts, and fractured families. Amidst the challenges, there's also a profound journey of healing for both hearts and souls.

The novel dives into the complexities of parenting, school dynamics, and the societal pressures faced by families. It's a tale that may resonate with couples, prompting discussions about their own parenting experiences, values, and approaches. As the story aptly puts it, 'Every relationship encounters its bumps, its highs, its lows.'

Book: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a classic novel that explores themes of love, class, and societal expectations in 19th-century England.

The story follows the spirited Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates the complexities of societal norms and expectations while grappling with her feelings of love and pride.

The writing was impeccable, characterized by vivid descriptions and brilliance. The story was not only engaging but also intelligent, while the characters were exceptionally well-crafted.

The storytelling, descriptions, humour, characters, and romance all captivated me completely. Every aspect felt natural, making the characters seem incredibly real. In summary, it was a flawless and utterly perfect experience.

Definitely recommend it for couples to read together.

A picture of the book the princess bride by William Goldman

*The Princess Bride* by William Goldman is a timeless classic that blends adventure, romance, fantasy, and humor in a truly unique way. Framed as a story within a story, the book follows the journey of Buttercup, a beautiful young woman, and her true love, Westley, as they navigate an epic quest to be together despite overwhelming odds.

Along the way, they encounter colourful characters like the witty Inigo Montoya, the giant Fezzik, and the villainous Prince Humperdinck.

What makes The Princess Bride so special is its combination of swashbuckling action, clever humour, and heartfelt romance, all wrapped up in Goldman's playful storytelling style. The book doesn’t just follow the traditional fairy-tale narrative, it pokes fun at it, offering readers a mix of irony and sincerity that makes it appealing to a wide audience.

The story incorporates epic sword fights, daring rescues, and memorable lines like “As you wish” and “Inconceivable!” which have since become iconic. Its themes of true love, adventure, and loyalty resonate with readers of all ages, making it a versatile read for couples. Whether you’re drawn to the romance, the humour, or the action-packed adventure, *The Princess Bride* offers something for everyone. Sharing the book’s witty quotes and unforgettable characters can become a fun and playful part of your relationship, sparking conversations and laughs long after you’ve finished reading.

Book: The making of the Outlander

If you and your partner are fans of the series "Outlander" this book will be a fun read for you and your partner. The Making of Outlander typically includes insights into the production process, interviews with the cast and crew, details about the set design, costumes, and the challenges faced during filming. It may also contain photographs, concept art, and other visual elements that offer fans a deeper appreciation for the creation of the Outlander series.

Occasionally, books of this nature tend to veer into clichéd territory, and for enthusiasts of the series (both the books and the TV show), around 90% of the content might already be familiar. However, this book stands out from that pattern.

While certain aspects seemed to be previously known, the majority of its content offers a captivating exploration of how a highly popular book series successfully underwent television adaptation. The adaptation process, as depicted in the book, is genuinely intriguing and sheds light on the seamless transition from the literary realm to the realm of television.

Book: The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

It is written from a unique perspective, this is one of the few, if not the only, romantic comedies with a male protagonist. The Rosie Project is a heartwarming and amusing novel that resonates with anyone who has courageously pursued life or love despite daunting obstacles.

The story revolves around Don Tillman, a genetics professor whose lifelong struggle with social conventions has led him to believe that romance is not within his wiring.

Although initially hesitant, Don's perspective shifts when an acquaintance suggests he'd be an ideal husband, leading him to ponder the statistical likelihood of finding a perfect match.

This contemplation sparks the beginning of the 'Wife Project,' Don's quest to discover an ideal life partner. It's during this journey that he encounters Rosie Jarman, a woman who possesses all the qualities he had envisioned.

This book will make you laugh and not many books can do that. This was a truly delightful book to read and you will never ask for a minute of the time spent reading it back.

Novel: Ready Player One

The recently released movie is an adaptation of this book. If you haven't seen the film, you might be curious about the book's storyline. On the flip side, those who have watched the movie will likely be interested in delving into the book's narrative. Ready Player One is a science fiction novel written by Ernest Cline.

The story is set in the year 2045 when the world is facing widespread economic and social challenges.

To escape the harsh realities of life, people engage in a virtual reality universe called the OASIS, created by the eccentric James Halliday.

When Halliday dies, he leaves behind a series of clues and challenges within the OASIS, promising his immense fortune and control of the virtual world to whoever can solve them. The protagonist, Wade Watts, known by his avatar Parzival, becomes the first "gunter" to discover the initial clue.

As the quest intensifies, Wade and his friends, including the enigmatic Artemis, find themselves in a high-stakes race against a powerful corporation known as Innovative Online Industries and other competitors who are determined to find the Easter egg hidden within the OASIS.

If you and your partner love fictional stories then is one of the best books you will ever read.

Book: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

"Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals from its war wounds, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer's son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julian Carax. But when he sets out to find the author's other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written."

This book unfolds like a cinematic epic on paper, blending a noir atmosphere with captivating elements such as crumbling ruins, youthful romance, disfigurement, lust, and torture. Zafón, a master of prose, retains his quotability even in translation.

The narrative is anchored in Barcelona, spanning from the late 1800s to the 1960s, with a significant emphasis on post-civil war Spain's recovery during the 1940s and 1950s. The tale is bittersweet, exploring the gradual acceptance of loss as much as the struggle against it and the quest for happiness. This book is undeniably a compelling choice for couples to enjoy together.

Book: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

The story revolves around Arthur Dent, an ordinary human, who is unexpectedly saved by his alien friend Ford Prefect just before Earth is destroyed to make room for an interstellar highway.

Ford Prefect is a researcher for "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," an eccentric electronic guidebook offering witty advice for space travellers. Arthur and Ford then embark on a space journey, encountering a diverse array of peculiar characters and navigating through unusual situations.

This classic series is a must-read, and if you don't find it amusing, you might have lost a couple of bucks to a scam. It stands out as the most hilariously absurd book I've ever encountered, though that sentiment might be influenced by it being my initial exposure to this genre.

The widespread acclaim is entirely justified for those who appreciate this particular brand of humour. While there may be more intricate and ironic sci-fi works available, nothing quite matches the sheer pleasure of Douglas Adams' creations. Additionally, the subsequent parts of the series offer some of the finest examples of indirect social criticism.

Definitely recommend this.

Book: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

Enter the world of Eleanor Oliphant, a woman grappling with social awkwardness, expressing her unfiltered thoughts with brutal honesty. Her meticulously scheduled life revolves around avoiding social interactions, featuring weekends filled with frozen pizza, vodka, and phone conversations with her mother.

Everything takes a turn when Eleanor crosses paths with Raymond, the bumbling and less-than-hygienic IT guy from her office.

In an unexpected twist, it's Raymond's compassionate nature that becomes the catalyst for Eleanor's journey to mend her profoundly damaged heart.

While the plot may seem like a routine slice of life, the true gem of the narrative lies in the complexity of the titular character. Eleanor Oliphant is a brilliantly crafted, unlikeable protagonist aloof, judgmental, and uncomfortably awkward. The book, though seemingly mundane, resonates with a peculiar warmth, providing both heart and an oddly comforting reading experience.

5 fiction books for couples to read together

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Allow me to introduce you to Ove. He's a grumpy fellow, the type who points at people he doesn't like as if they were caught trying to break into his bedroom. With strong principles, fixed routines, and a short temper, folks label him as the cantankerous neighbour everyone wants to avoid. Yet, beyond his crusty exterior, there's a tale of heartache and sorrow.

At the age of 59, Ove has not only lost his job but also the love of his life, his wife Sonja. The yearning for Sonja is so intense that at times, he struggles to cope with his own existence.

"A Man Called Ove" essentially critiques a society that emphasizes thinking over action and underscores the dangers of becoming trapped in grief. While the novel carries a certain solemnity, it also radiates optimism and plenty of moments that will make you burst into laughter.

The book thief by Markus Zuzas

In the intense backdrop of 1939 Nazi Germany, where the entire nation holds its breath, Liesel's life takes a significant turn at her brother's graveside. A chance discovery of a book, The Gravedigger's Handbook, hidden in the snow becomes her inaugural act of book thievery. This marks the beginning of Liesel's love affair with books and words.

Starting with random thefts, Liesel's book stealing becomes more deliberate over time, guided by her accordion-playing foster father.

With his help, she learns to read and extends her pilfering to books salvaged from Nazi book burnings and the mayor's wife's library, wherever books can be found.

However, these are perilous times. Liesel's foster parents, Hans and Rosa Herbermann, are financially struggling Germans tasked with caring for her. The danger escalates when they decide to hide a Jewish man, Max, in their home. Despite the risks, Max and Liesel develop a profound friendship. He even creates a beautiful story for her, titled "The Standover Man," a narrative that profoundly touches the heart.

I would only describe this book with one word "Evocative". The book brings strong feelings, memories, or images to mind.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a thrilling sci-fi novel that thrusts readers into a future where Earth faces a dire threat from an alien race called the Formics. Meet Ender Wiggin, a remarkably bright young boy chosen by the government for a vital role in the war effort. Despite being just six years old, Ender possesses a rare blend of strategic genius and compassion.

Ender embarks on an intense training journey at a prestigious space academy, where he learns the art of war through challenging simulations. The story unfolds as Ender grows rapidly, forced to mature beyond his years.

In simpler terms, "Ender's Game" is an exciting adventure that follows a young prodigy's quest to save Earth from an alien threat. It's a story that combines action with deep reflections on the complexities of being a leader in the face of overwhelming odds.

What makes "Ender's Game" so compelling is its exploration of Ender's character – a mix of brilliance and empathy. As the plot unfolds, readers are taken on a gripping journey filled with suspense, action, and ethical dilemmas. The novel goes beyond mere interstellar battles, delving into the human psyche and the intricate challenges of leadership.
